What is expected of members?
WCB Toastmasters provides a mutually supportive environment for speaking skills and leadership training - one in which our members can excel at a pace that is manageable - and also fosters deep and lasting learning. With that, members are expected to attend club meetings regularly; prepare for and fulfill meeting assignments; serve as a club officer when called upon to do so; and provide fellow members with helpful, constructive evaluations. Members are encouraged to deliver speeches and/or carry out the assignments in the leadership manual, prepared with an eye to meeting the objectives for the respective speech or leadership assignment, for the respective manual in which they are working.
What benefits can I expect?
The Toastmasters program will improve your communication skills and open doors in your personal and professional life.
People who get ahead in life are those who can communicate effectively. Wouldn’t you like to develop this priceless skill? Now you can. Toastmasters will show you how to listen effectively, think on your feet, and speak confidently. You will learn valuable leadership skills - all in a supportive, non-intimadating environment.
What do we do during meetings?
All meetings are run according to a pre-prepared 120-minute agenda, with a 10-15 break scheduled at the half-way mark for members and guests to mingle. Members will have the opportunity to practice giving prepared speeches (generally 5 to 7 minutes), from the speech manuals. Those speeches are evaluated, and the member then gets valuable, non-judgmental feedback, on how to improve. Members and guests also may participate in giving 1 minute impromptu mini-speeches, call Table Topics. Various other smaller components of the meetings help you with such other matters as improving vocabulary, honing your debating skills and learning to really closely listen.
What our members are saying...
Our members agree that given the choice of spending time labouring in an academic setting (or spending money on costly seminars), versus the self-paced learning atmosphere of fun and fellowship at Toastmasters, Toastmasters wins, hands down, for having the best program in public speaking skills and leadership training!
